After more than 30 years of providing first-rate site engineering and land development design in Virginia, especially in the greater Harrisonburg market, Blackwell Engineering joins AES Consulting Engineers (AES). By welcoming the talented team of Blackwell Engineering, AES adds a Harrisonburg office to their existing offices in Chesapeake, Williamsburg, and Richmond.  AES has served the needs of private land developers and municipalities across Virginia since 1980 by providing site engineering, land planning, surveying, landscape architecture, and municipal utilities design.

“At AES we strive to take care of the two groups at the center of our business,” Jason Noah, President of AES, said of the merger. “We were impressed by Blackwell’s similar culture and approach to taking care of clients and employees. This shared approach coupled with Ed’s continued leadership, and the expertise of his wonderful staff, made this merger the right fit.”

Ed Blackwell, P.E. views this as an opportunity to continue the service and dedication to quality his father started nearly 35 years ago.  “We always strive to treat our clients’ projects like they are our own; to care and give the best service possible.  I see that same approach in AES. This was one of the reasons the merger has been smooth,” Ed said of the two companies joining operations. “Caring for our employees was an important part of the merger; to make sure each employee had a place with good pay and benefits, with opportunities to grow.  AES has been incredible. They truly care for their employees and this has made the merger seamless for my staff.”

Founded by Dick Blackwell, P.E. in 1988, Blackwell Engineering continued as a family company as his sons Rick, Ed, and Nathan each joined and became engineers.  Since Dick began to step back and following the tragic passing of Rick in 2015, Ed has been running the company for more than a decade. Nathan, also a principal and an engineer, exits the company via this merger to pursue various real estate interests including land development and home-building. He is pleased to see his coworkers embrace this new opportunity with AES.

“AES embraces the challenge of attracting top talent and serving land development and municipal clients in Western Virginia,” Jason Noah said. “We are optimistic about the future growth of this market and AES. We are thankful this effort will be led by Ed and his dedicated team of engineers, field staff, and administrative professionals.”
